Here are a bunch of films that I am excited about: Whip-It, Fame, An Education and The Countess. Enjoy.
Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip-It starring Ellen Page looks awesome. It opens October 9. Think Juno on skates and without the pregnancy.
Fame was one of those movies I loved when I was a teen. it’s being remade and will be released this fall. I AM THERE.
An Education
I am excited for this one directed by Lone Scherfig starring Carey Mulligan that will open on October 2.

Coco Before Chanel directed by Anne Fontaine opens in the US on September 25
The Countess directed by Julie Delpy- doesn’t have a release date here yet in the US

I just died from convulsing with happiness watching the trailer for Whip It! Now it’s gonna be my next cult hit film with badass female misfits… after Ghost World and Tank Girl.
Really enjoying your blog – just found it a few weeks ago. Very encouraging. Thanks for doing this!
I’m curious to see “Whip it”, and at the same time I’m worried Ellen Page’s character will be too Juno-like.
I’m so excited about Whip It! And Meryl Streep has suddenly made me more interested in Julia Childs than I ever thought I could be. Exciting movies msy be on the way.
I’m looking forward to Julie Delpy’s film (big fan) but I find it interesting that the trailer only hints at the Countess’s obsession with preserving her youth through young virgin women’s blood. A historical figure, she was quite the serial killer, torturing and killing her young maids in order to bathe in their blood. Ew. Ew. Ew. Wondering if Delpy will soft-pedal all that or if it’s really a horror film?
Love the look of Whip It, mainly because it’s more Kristen Wiig, who I thought, along with Alan Tudyk, was the only good think about Knocked Up.
I agree with Therese about The Countess – ew, ew, ew.
The trailer barely hints at the agonising, horrific death this woman inflicted on so many young girls. Instead, the film appears to be going down that same old slippery slope of reducing a woman’s motivation – even that of arguably the most sadistic serial killer in history – to just a love-gone-wrong story.
I hope I’m wrong… because the real Countess Bathory’s crimes and their political implications could be grist for a great historical thriller.
“Whip It” looks sooo good! Not only should we support movies made by and starring women, but the movie actually looks like it has a feminist theme….female empowerment and doing what you love despite other’s opinions.
I wrote about this new movie at my blog. Here’s the link: http://youngfeministadventures.blogspot.com/2009/07/whip-it-whip-it-good.html
