It's good to be talking, but what are we going to DO about it? If movies are dumbing down towards "Tranformers"-type products (I think that's the key, they're made as products, no art involved), then as Anita said, we should develop a strong infrastructure for web-based films. And this infrastructure should include an explicit mentorship model to nurture new female talents.

I READ RECENTLY THAT WOMEN AUTHORS TEND TO SUBJECT FEMALE CHARACTERS TO MORE AND MORE GRISLY VIOLENCE. THAT IT HAS BECOME A TEST OF WRITING LIKE A MAN IN CERTAIN FICTION STYLES. IS THE PROBLEM AS SIMPLE AS THESE AUTHORS AND FILMMAKERS ARE FOCUSING ON HOW TO CREATE LIKE A MAN? I AM WAITING FOR A FILM THAT IS NOT SUBJECT TO SHOPWORN FORMULAS.

Indeed there seems to be a fair amount of discussion about roles for women in the film industry - I attended a panel held by Women in Film and TV Uk chapter last week which I blogged about (http://anitacrisinel.blogspot.com/2009/10/venice-groundbreaking-series.html) and it was specifically about the lack of female roles and what we, as women in the industry, can do about that. The answer they suggested was making making our own projects and to look to the internet - which is not a silly idea. It seems there is a growing trend towards women creating on the web - notably the woman centric web series Venice the Series due out late November, which ticks all the right boxes - It's written, directed, produced by women, the majority of the roles are for women and for women who are over 35. Other examples I've come across of women creating and succeeding on the web is the Guild webseries and Imaginary Bitches which is up for awards... Naturally we don't want to be relegated to just the web but with series such as these, series which see these creative woman with substantial fan followings, perhaps we are witnessing the beginning of something?

Great post, Melissa. Your blog is a huge, grim, stark reminder why we still have to fight for gender equality and voice in Hollywood.

What really makes me angry is Hollywood's fake liberal atmosphere. For all its fake progressive politics that Hollywood claims to hold, it's sure sexist as hell toward women.
