I read Val McDermid's novel called 'The torment of others, later then adapted to the well-known psychological series Wire in the blood. This thought occurs to me very naturally that: "what kind of person the writer is when she has such deep empathy and compassion with her characters? The ability to penetrate into someone's else mind is scary, especially a killer. She made it so convincing to the point I was questioning about her personna. After viewing this interview, I must say "Val Mcdermid is the best while dealing with words, in writing and in oral. Her words are very persuasive and logical. I love this part "For male writers, who have been raised with a different mindset about their place in the world, it’s a much tougher journey to get to the same place." That is awesome. Reading her novels makes the Esl (english as second language)in my high school so mundane. There are things that cannot match with such high standards.
Thanks for posting this.

Echoing the thanks above, for the excellent interview. I, too, am struck by what she said about female writers being more empathetic to victimhood. I know of Val McDermid, but now I should be reading her books!

I loved this interview, because I read Val McDermid's books. And, coincidentally have just finished reading Lono Waiwaiole's "Dark Paradise", the best Pacific noir I've ever read—full of ideas about sex, power and colonisation—and was wondering why he writes so well about violence and now Val McDermid's comments about violence and victimhood have given me a clue, I think. Many thanks.
