Issa Rae’s HBO Comedy ‘Insecure’ Finds Pilot Director in Melina Masoukas

Issa Rae’s transition from YouTube to prime time continues.

Rae’s HBO comedy “Insecure” has found a pilot director in music-video helmer Melina Masoukas. “Insecure” will mark Masoukas’ TV directing debut.

The series will hone Rae’s comedic persona as the “Awkward Black Girl,” focusing on the confusion, frustration and anger experienced by a black female nerd navigating the dating world.

The initial episode will be co-written by Rae and “The Nightly Show” host Larry Wilmore. If picked up by the network, “Insecure” will be executive produced by Wilmore and co-exec produced by Rae.

Masoukas has previously directed videos for Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and many other top-liners.

The “Insecure” pilot is set to shoot in the fall.
