Karyn Kusama’s ‘The Invitation’ Wins Best Film Award at 48th Sitges Film Festival

Karyn Kusama’s dinner-party drama “The Invitation” took home the Best Film trophy from Spain’s Sitges Film Festival over the weekend.

The film opened the the 2015 SXSW Festival and has been acquired by Drafthouse Films.

In an interview with Women and Hollywood about “The Invitation,” Kusama said of her fourth feature, “This movie made me think about the paranoid thrillers of the ’70s that I love, movies that leave the viewer with more questions than answers. I was interested in the discomfort and dread I felt when I first read [Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi’s] script — those feelings put me in touch with the discomfort and dread I sometimes unwittingly carry around in my daily life. The story is an exploration of those tendrils of emotion and an example of our worst fears blowing up into a nightmare, which felt very cinematic to me.”
