Meera Menon’s Female-Led Wall Street Drama ‘Equity’ Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics

Meera Menon’s banker drama “Equity” has been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

The deal took place on the day before the film’s world premiere at Sundance 2016.

“Breaking Bad” actress Anna Gunn stars as Naomi Bishop, a senior investment banker who thrives in the big-stakes, high-balling world that she works in. But a controversial IPO exposes the web of politics and deception she’s caught in. Naomi also finds herself hounded by an aggressive prosecutor (Alysia Reiner, “Orange is the New Black”) and troubled by her strained relationship with a junior (Sarah Megan Thomas). Naomi must then reexamine her ambitions and Wall Street itself — an institution she loves despite the clear glass ceilings built into the structure.

In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Menon explained what drew her to Naomi’s story: “Creating a portrait of a female point of view in an environment that we’ve pretty much exclusively understood through a male perspective — “Wall Street,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” “Arbitrage” — etc. was beyond exciting for me. It felt downright necessary.”

That desired woman’s POV was achieved via collaboration with a core team of female filmmakers: screenwriter Amy Fox and producers Thomas and Reiner.

Menon’s directorial debut was the critically acclaimed “Farah Goes Bang.”
