Hurrah. How exciting.
One of my favorite shows, Call the Midwife which airs on PBS here in the US is in production on its third season in England. Turns out as they were lining up the directors for the new season they seem to have hired only women. And while there are many shows that only hire male directors (see latest stats from the DGA men directed 85% of TV shows), I don’t recall a series ever having only female directors.
The show is very popular and director Philippa Lowthorpe won a BAFTA for her work. It also won a Christopher Award for the Christmas episode.
So next year we won’t have to look at the credits of Call the Midwife to see how many women directors have been hired. We will see the names of Thea Sharrock, Juliet May, China Moo-Young and Minkie Spiro.
Call the Midwife is created and written by Heidi Thomas and is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth.
