Kristen Stewart’s career trajectory has taken an interesting and exciting turn as of late. But in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the young actress argues that the odds are against women in Hollywood.
We at Women and Hollywood are becoming bigger fans of Stewart by the day. After taking some time away from acting following the final “Twilight” film, Stewart returned to the screen in “Camp X-Ray,” a small indie which saw the blockbuster actress playing a young soldier in the military. She followed that up with a supporting role in “Still Alice,” showing great chemistry with her Oscar-winning co-star Julianne Moore. Stewart is currently doing press for “Clouds of Sils Maria.” Her performance made her the first American actress ever to win a Cesar, France’s equivalent of the Academy Award.
Stewart has much to celebrate, then, yet she’s also very aware of the fact that her success in the industry doesn’t mean that Hollywood’s “woman problem” is going anywhere. “Women inevitably have to work a little bit harder to be heard,” Stewart told Harper’s Bazaar UK. “Hollywood is disgustingly sexist. It’s crazy. It’s so offensive it’s crazy.”
Stewart has previously directed a music video, and her mother Jules Mann-Stewart, a longtime script supervisor, directed a feature, “K-11,” back in 2012. We’re hopeful that Stewart, who has been acting since she was 8, opts to step behind the camera at some point — we get the sense that she’d be a talented filmmaker who’d bring women’s stories to the fore.
