St. Vincent to Make Directorial Debut in All-Female Horror Anthology ‘XX’

Musician Annie Clark, better known by her stage name of St. Vincent, will be making her directorial debut with a segment in “XX,” the upcoming all-female horror anthology film.

As Rolling Stone details, “XX” will mark her “first major project since she wrapped up her extensive Digital Witness tour in support of her 2014 album, ‘St. Vincent,’ last fall.” She won the 2015 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album for said album. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to explore the genre-film medium,” said Clark.

Like classic horror anthologies such as “Tales from the Crypt,” or recent entries into the genre, including “The ABC’s of Death,” this horror anthology allows each director to tell any horror story they choose. For “XX,” each segment of the anthology will not only be directed by a woman, but will also star female leads.

Clark co-wrote her segment with horror staple Roxanne Benjamin, whose credits include the “V/H/S” films. Benjamin is producing.

In addition to Clark, “XX” will feature segments from Karyn Kusama (“Jennifer’s Body,”) Jennifer Lynch (“The Walking Dead”) and Jovanka Vuckovic, director and the once editor of horror culture magazine, Rue Morgue.

Kusama has revealed that her segment and Vuckovic’s segments are complete. In a recent episode of KILLER POV podcast she said, “The films are very different, but there are overriding anxieties about female-ness to a degree. And I want to say body horror is a component.”
