"You’ve had a great life, mom. You had a great husband and a career in music," Blythe Danner’s retiree Carol is told by her daughter (Malin Akerman).
But Carol doesn’t just want a life in the past tense, and so she embarks on new adventures: a romance with a plain-spoken, yet well off, sailor (Sam Elliot), an alcohol-fueled friendship with her neighbor (Martin Starr), and indulging in off-prescription use of medical marijuana with her Golden Girls pals (Rhea Perlman, June Squibb, and Mary Kay Place).
It’s about damn time a fine actress like Danner finally got a starring role in a film. With Oscar talk coming out of Sundance, "I’ll See You in My Dreams" looks like it might be something more than just another silver-haired charmer when it opens May 15.
