Trailer Watch: Claire Danes Quits the CIA But Can’t Leave it Behind in ‘Homeland’ Season 5

When we last saw Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), she had quit the CIA and seemed committed to taking a more active role in raising her daughter Frannie. A trailer for season five of Showtime’s “Homeland” proves that, try as she might, Carrie can never truly leave the CIA behind.

Two years have passed since Carrie’s time as the station chief of Islamabad, and she’s working in Berlin as the head of security for a German philanthropist. Carrie is shown attending a children’s birthday party (wearing a balloon hat!) and looking totally at ease with Frannie in her lap. No bombs, no issues with her bipolar medication, no love affairs with age-inappropriate men or possible terrorists — this is a different Carrie than we’re used to seeing.

Naturally, the peace and quiet doesn’t last long — it never does in “Homeland.” A CIA data breach in Berlin leads to accusations of Carrie leaking information. “Maybe I knew some day the past would catch up with me,” Carrie sighs. We see footage of her aiming a gun, snorting a line of cocaine, and seemingly being abducted — just the kind of drama we’ve become accustomed to seeing Carrie embroiled in. As a new character shown in the spot notes, “You can take the girl out of the CIA, but, you know…”

The Season 5 premiere of “Homeland” will air October 4th on Showtime.
