Trailer Watch: Julianne Moore and Mia Wasikowska Grasp at the Hollywood Dream in ‘Maps to the Stars’

One of the buzziest films to come out of Cannes, Maps to the Stars, has released a trailer.

David Cronenberg’s showbiz satire stars Julianne Moore (who won the best actress award at Cannes) as fading actress Havana Segrand, the daughter of an iconic Hollywood ingenue (Sarah Gadon) who died young and left a pretty corpse. Havana is haunted by visions of her vicious mother, while fighting tooth and nail for the starring role in the remake of the movie that made her mother a star.

Mia Wasikowska co-stars as Havana’s new assistant, a pyromaniac burn victim who’s not as innocent as she appears. Her horndog love interest, played by Robert Pattinson, might have a heart of gold — but also a wandering eye for Havana.

Havana’s story is somewhat paralleled by that of Benjie (Evan Bird), a child star with a monstrous stage mom (Olivia Williams) and an attention-seeking TV-psychologist dad (John Cusack).

The film has been picked up by Focus International and the word is that it will be released in first quarter 2015 taking Moore out of contention for an overdue Oscar. (Good news for Moore is that Sony Pictures Classics picked up her film Still Alice out of Toronto in which she gives an Oscar worthy performance as a 50 year old woman with early onset Alzheimer’s) The film will also play at this year’s New York Film Festival.
