2016 Emmy Award Nominations: Little Love for “OITNB,” Samantha Bee, or Female Directors

Credit: NBC

The Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced this morning. Unlike the Oscars, which only has 24 awards to give out, the Emmy’s have hundreds of categories. And while we’re not going to dig through them all to count the number of women nominated, let’s just say that, while there have been a ton of women nominated for a variety of categories this year, there are a number of categories where women were complete shut out.

Each of the directing categories for drama series, comedy series, and TV movie only have one woman nominated, which should accentuate for us just how few women there are directing television.

Interestingly, “Orange is the New Black,” a series that heavily features women at its center, was only nominated in a casting category. If the casting was so stellar, why were none of the women nominated?

Also shut out for Variety Talk Series was Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal.” Despite being nominated for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series, the show didn’t warrant a nom for the show, with Emmy voters opting instead for the male-dominated late night scene plus Jerry Seinfeld’s ridiculous “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”
