2016 won’t go down as the most homogeneous (i.e., exclusionary) year in recent Oscar history. Three female-centric films ("Brooklyn," "Room" and "Mad Max: Fury Road") made the cut for the eight Best Picture nominees, with George Miller’s dystopian feminist tract receiving the second-highest number of nominations after "The Revenant." Four women screenwriters received Academy recognition too: Phyllis Nagy ("Carol") and Emma Donoghue ("Room") in the adapted screenlay category and Meg LeFauve ("Inside Out") and Andrea Berloff ("Straight Outta Compton") in the original.
There’s more to celebrate: France’s Oscar submission, Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s "Mustang," made the shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film, as did Liz Garbus’ Nina Simone portrait "What Happened, Miss Simone?" for Best Documentary Feature. Two of the year’s splashiest action movies, "Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," received nods for their female editors: Margaret Sixel for the former and Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey for the latter.
But there’s a lot to deplore, too. Most noticeably, "Carol" was snubbed for Best Picture. The exclusion of Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance and "The Danish Girl" means that queer stories have been jettisoned by the Oscars’ most important category. And speaking of diversity, it’s time to dust off last year’s #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, because the twenty acting nominees this year are completely lacking in color this year as well.
No women were nominated in the directing or cinematography categories.
