WeForShe have published the 2016 WriteHer List.
The women’s advocacy group inaugurated the small-screen equivalent to the Black List last year. The scripts are evaluated based on a variety of criteria including diversity of cast, the Bechdel Test and the number and quality of female roles.
This year WeForShe received almost 200 nominations. Among the 16 winning scripts are “Harmony” from playwright and writer-producer Sara B. Cooper ( “Continuum,” “House M.D.”), “How to Hate Yourself” by writer and stand-up comedian Laura House (“Mom,” “Blue Collar TV”) and “Douglas Heights” by Leah Keith (“The Polar Bears”), who has previously worked as a Motion Picture Executive at DreamWorks and a Motion Picture and Television Executive at Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Television.
The WriteHer list has already spawned some success stories. Two of 2015’s honorees have since found new representation, while two writers featured have been hired on staff or to develop new series. Scarlett Lacey’s script for “Model Women” has been picked up at ABC.
2015 honoree Kristen Newman said of her experiences post WriteHer List, “I was very honored to receive a WriteHer award for my unproduced pilot. I was amazed, however, when VH1 contacted me to buy the pilot because it was brought to their attention when Maggie Malina read the list. There is so much good work by women out there going unproduced just because it isn’t on anyone’s radar, so I’m so grateful for the existence of WeForShe.”
