4 Women Directors in Competition at 2012 Venice International Film Festival

Contrary to the folks at Cannes who seem to not be able to find any women directed movies for their competition, Alberto Barbara has gotten 4 films with women directors (or co-directors) in the competition.

As previously reported, Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist will be opening the festival, but will screen out of competition. 23 films make up the rest of the Out of Competition films (this includes special events.) Our best guesstimate is that there are 6 women directed films with women co-directing 2 of the 6.

And in Orrizonti (Horizons), which celebrates new trends in world cinema, there are 4 women directed films out of 18.

Here are the women directed movies:

Opening Film (Out of Competition):

The Reluctant Fundamentalist — Mira Nair

In Competition:

Fill the Void — Rama Bursztyn (with Yigal Bursztyn)

La Cinquieme Saison — Jessica Woodworth (with Peter Brosens)

Un Giorno Speciale — Francesca Comencini

Linhas de Wellington — Valeria Sarmiento

Out of Competition:

Love Is All You Need — Susanne Bier

Anton’s Right Here — Lyubov Arkus

It Was Better Tomorrow — Hinde Boujemaa (not 100% sure of Boujemaa’s gender)

Clarisse — Liliana Cavani

Sfiorando il muro — Silvia Giralucci (with Luca Ricciardi)

El impenetrable — Fausta Quattrini (with Daniele Incalcaterra)

Orrizonti:

Wadjda — Haifaa Al Mansour

Leones — Jazmin Lopez

Yema — Djamila Sahraoui

Araf -Somewhere In Between — Yesim Ustaoglu
