Trailer Watch: Emma Stone Is Ready to Make a Statement in “Cruella”

"Cruella": Laurie Sparham

“From the very beginning I realized I saw the world differently than everyone else. That didn’t sit well with some people, but I wasn’t for everyone,” says Emma Stone in a new trailer for “Cruella.” “I guess they were always scared that I’d be a psycho.” Cue maniacal laughter.

Set in 1970s London during the punk rock revolution, Disney’s live-action prequel to “101 Dalmatians” tells Cruella de Vil’s origin story, tracing her evolution from a young grifter and aspiring fashion designer named Estella to a villain determined to make a coat out of Dalmatian fur.

By her own account, Estrella was “born brilliant, born bad, and a little bit mad.” When her unique fashion sense catches the attention of fashion icon Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), their relationship “sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side,” the film’s synopsis hints.

A three-time Oscar nominee, Stone took home the honor for “La La Land” and received nods for “The Favourite” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).” “Zombieland: Double Tap” and “Maniac” are among her most recent credits.

“Cruella” will be released May 28. Dana Fox (“Home Before Dark”) and Tony McNamara (“The Great”) penned the screenplay. Aline Brosh McKenna (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), Kelly Marcel (“Venom”), and Steve Zissis (“Togetherness”) have story credits.
