Gina Rodriguez is following up her role as a grifter-in-training in Miranda July’s “Kajillionaire” by taking on a global catastrophe in “Awake.” The survival thriller sees the “Jane the Virgin” alumna playing a former soldier whose daughter may be the key to humanity’s salvation.
When a mysterious disaster wipes out all electronics and takes away people’s ability to sleep, the world is left in ruins. “Something happened. We don’t know what caused it or why it occurred,” we’re told in a new trailer for the pic. One thing is certain: “After 48 hours there’s a loss of critical thinking. It’s going to be total chaos.”
Sleep deprivation will lead to disorientation, hallucinations, and hysteria. “We’re all going to die if we can’t solve this,” one character warns.
Jill (Rodriguez) discovers that her young daughter (Ariana Greenblatt) can sleep, and she must decide whether to “protect her children at all costs or sacrifice everything to save the world,” the film’s synopsis teases.
“Someone Great,” “Miss Bala,” and “Annihilation” are among Rodriguez’s credits.
“Awake” launches on Netflix June 9. Jennifer Jason Leigh co-stars.
