Kaitlyn Dever and Karen Maine Team Up for “Rosaline,” a Revisionist Take on “Romeo and Juliet”

Karen Maine is following up a “love story between one woman and her vagina” with the most famous love story of all. The “Yes, God, Yes” writer-director has been tapped by 20th Century to helm “Rosaline,” a “comedic and revisionist” take on William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” with Kaitlyn Dever attached to star. Deadline broke the news.

Based on Rebecca Serle’s 2010 novel “When You Were Mine,” the pic will offer a “modern twist” on “Romeo and Juliet” through “the eyes of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline, a sharp but idealistic young woman — who happens to be Romeo’s recent ex. What begins as an attempt to foil the famous romance and win back her guy becomes a journey of self-discovery as she ultimately works to help get the star-crossed lovers back together,” the source summarizes.

Dever received a Golden Globe nomination for Netflix’s “Unbelievable,” a drama about a young woman accused of lying about her rape. “Last Man Standing,” “Booksmart,” and “Outside In” are among her other credits.

Maine made her feature debut with 2020 Sundance pic “Yes, God, Yes,” a coming-of-age comedy about self-pleasure starring “Stranger Things'” Natalia Dyer.

Asked what advice she’d give other women directors, Maine urged, “Always trust your gut. Do things in your unique voice and style and have confidence in that vision.”
