“Skating is the best thing that happened to me,” says Rachel Saanchita Gupta in a new trailer for “Skater Girl.” “I feel like I belong. There’s no one to control me, no rules to follow.” The Netflix pic marks Gupta’s debut and sees her playing Prerna, a teen living in a remote village in Rajasthan, India who falls in love with skateboarding after being introduced to the sport by Jessica (Amy Maghera), a London-based advertising exec visiting her village.
Wowed by Prerna and other local kids’ passion for skateboarding, Jessica decides to build a skate park. “It could give several girls the courage to follow their dreams,” we’re told.
Not everyone is enthusiastic about the prospect of building a skate park, but Jessica perseveres. “The only way to conquer fear is to just go through it. Believe you’ve got it,” she says.
Directed by Manjari Makijany, who co-wrote with Vinati Makijany, “Skater Girl” launches on Netflix June 11.
Last month a teaser dropped for the second season of “Betty,” HBO’s critically acclaimed comedy about a group of girl skaters living in NYC. Crystal Moselle serves as director on the series, which is set to return in June.
