Exclusive: Holly Morris Spotlights the Women’s Euro-Arabian North Pole Expedition in “Exposure” Teaser

"Exposure"

Explorer Felicity Aston leads a high-stakes expedition in “Exposure,” a documentary that’s set to make its world premiere at DOC NYC November 13. “This is such a dangerous environment,” we’re told in an exclusive new teaser for the film.

The Women’s Euro-Arabian North Pole Expedition was conceived with an ambitious goal: skiing to the North Pole. “I wanted to put together an expedition that brings together women from the Arab world and the West,” Aston explains.

Along with an all-women crew, director Holly Morris follows the group “as they navigate everything from frostbite and polar bear threats, to sexism and self-doubt in an intimate story of resilience, survival, and global citizenry — in what may be the last-ever over-ice expedition to the top of the world,” per the doc’s synopsis.

“Diverse, global, feminist stories that unfold in the crucible/elixir of the natural world have been my wheelhouse for a couple decades, so when I heard that this group was teaming up for an over-ice expedition to the top of the world, I just knew a film had to be made,” Morris told us in a soon-to-be published interview. “It was clear right away that this expedition was unprecedented — a first in so many ways. In the end, several of the women became the first from their nations to reach the North Pole. The stakes were very high from the get go. Given the climate crisis, I also knew this team might be among the last ever to have a real shot at reaching the North Pole. Indeed, the season after their expedition, climate change and geopolitical conflict between Ukraine and Russia meant ice station Barneo could not be built, cancelling all attempts at the pole. Then, in 2020 and 2021, COVID-19 wiped out the polar season before it even started.”

DOC NYC runs from November 10-28.
