Catherine Hardwicke’s “Mafia Mamma” Acquired by Bleecker Street, Toni Collette & Monica Bellucci Star

Collette in "Miss You Already"

Catherine Hardwicke and Toni Collette’s reunion is one step closer to the big screen. Bleecker Street has landed North American rights to “Mafia Mamma,” an action-comedy that reteams the “Miss You Already” collaborators. Variety confirmed the news.

Slated to kick off production in Italy this May, the pic sees Collette playing a suburban American woman who “inherits her grandfather’s mafia empire and must learn navigate her new role as the head of the family business, defying everyone’s expectations,” per the source. Monica Bellucci, whose recent credits include “Call My Agent!” and “The Man Who Sold His Skin,” co-stars.

Debbie Jhoon and Michael J. Feldman ( “AP Bio”) penned the script, which is based on an idea by Amanda Sthers (“Holy Lands”).

In addition to starring in the pic, Collette is producing. No word on when to expect “Mafia Mamma” just yet.

Collette starred alongside Drew Barrymore in 2015’s “Miss You Already,” the story of lifelong friends whose relationship is tested by pregnancy and illness. Hardwicke helmed the tearjerker.

In 2000 Collette received an Oscar nod for “The Sixth Sense.” More recently, she’s appeared in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” and “Knives Out.” The four-time Emmy nominee landed the prize for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “United States of Tara.” She’s set to make her directorial debut with “Writers and Lovers,” an adaptation of Lily King’s book about an aspiring novelist who finds herself in a love triangle.

“Twilight,” “Lords of Dogtown,” and “Thirteen” are among Hardwicke’s features. Her upcoming slate includes “Heathen,” a fantasy-adventure epic that follows a Viking warrior, and “Prisoner’s Daughter,” a family drama.
