Mindy Kaling is well on her way to mogul-dom. The actress, writer, and producer has inked a new deal with Amazon Publishing and Amazon Studios that will see her curating her own literary line, Mindy’s Book Studio, and adapting the material into feature films for Prime Video. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
“The story studio will publish books selected by Kaling from emerging and established diverse voices, to include romantic comedies, coming-of-age stories, and suspense dramas with female protagonists,” the source details. “Amazon Studios and Kaling will in turn team to adapt material published under Mindy’s Book Studio as feature films to exclusively stream on Prime Video worldwide.”
Kaling previously signed a deal with Amazon Publishing for which she’ll pen her first novel and a new book of essays. Amazon Studios acquired first-look rights for both projects. Kaling’s third memoir, “Nothing Like I Imagined,” was published as a Amazon Original Stories collection. “Late Night,” a feature comedy Kaling wrote and starred in, was picked up by Amazon Studios in a historic deal following its Sundance premiere.
“We could not be more thrilled to expand our collaboration with [Kaling] across Amazon to not only showcase her incredible talents but also introduce new, dynamic storytellers to our global customers,” stated Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios.
“I had the best time working on ‘Nothing Like I Imagined,’ and I am so excited to continue my relationship with Amazon,” Kaling said.
Kaling is also under an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, for which is will develop, write, and produce new broadcast, cable, and streaming projects. The shows she co-created, Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” and HBO Max’s “Sex Lives of College Girls,” have both been renewed. Kaling received six Emmy nominations for writing and producing “The Office.” Her rom-com series, “The Mindy Project,” which she created and toplined, ran for six seasons, from 2012-2017. Her more recent on-screen work includes “The Morning Show” and “Locked Down.”
