Teaser Watch: Anne Lister and Ann Walker Embark on Married Life in “Gentleman Jack” Season 2

"Gentleman Jack"

When we last saw Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) and Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) — at the end of “Gentleman Jack’s” first season, nearly three years ago — they had just taken the sacrament as wife and wife. In the teaser for the new season, the couple are settling into their life together at Shibden Hall, while navigating unpleasant rumors, family drama, and new business opportunities.

Since they’re living in Yorkshire in 1834, Anne and Ann cannot live entirely openly, but everyone seems to understand they are more than just roommates. Some neighbors are more accepting than others. “So they’re going to live together…?” one character asks in confusion. “Miss Lister has an unnatural hold over her,” another says of Ann.

Meanwhile, Anne is determined to make her fortune — which also scandalizes the community. “With Anne Lister’s wit and Miss Walker’s money, she could run the whole of Halifax!” someone says in horror. Yet Anne sees through the gossip and ruffled feathers, identifying the real problem people have with her. “If I were a man — thank heaven and providence I’m not — would you even think to question my ambition?” she wonders.

Created by Sally Wainwright, “Gentleman Jack” is based on the diaries of the real-life Anne Lister, who has been described as the “first modern lesbian.” The entire series is “based in historical fact and the five million words she wrote in her journals,” a press release notes. “Gentleman Jack” was pejorative nickname used in reference to Lister’s social climbing and her gender expression.

Wainwright and Jones have previously collaborated on “Scott & Bailey” and “Unforgiven,” and Wainwright and Rundle have worked together on “Happy Valley.” The latter show has been renewed for a third and final season.

“Gentleman Jack” will return this April on HBO and HBO Max. No specific premiere date has been announced just yet.
