From 1950s American housewife to 1860s English nurse, Florence Pugh is following up her role in Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” by going even further back in time in “The Wonder,” a drama set 13 years after the Great Famine. A trailer for the Netflix pic introduces us to Lib (Pugh), who is summoned to the Irish Midlands under strange circumstances. The healthcare worker been sent to a devout community to conduct a weeks-long examination over Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy), an 11-year-old girl who claims not to have eaten for four months. “It’s not your job to question us,” she’s told. “You are here only to watch.”

Described as everything from “an actress” to “chosen,” Anna seems to confound Lib. It’s not long before Lib is doing what she’s been warned against — questioning the community. “I’m here to find out the truth,” she says.

“The Wonder” is based on Emma Donoghue’s book of the same name. The “Room” novelist and screenwriter penned the script for “The Wonder” alongside Sebastián Lelio, the film’s director, and Alice Birch, the screenwriter behind Pugh’s breakout pic, “Lady Macbeth.”

Pugh received an Oscar nod for “Little Women.” “Black Widow,” “Midsommar,” and “Fighting with My Family” are among her other credits.

“The Wonder” hits select theaters November 2 and launches on Netflix November 16. It made its world premiere at Telluride in September.
