“If it gets dark, you just ride it,” Jennifer Lawrence is advised in a new trailer for “Causeway.” The Oscar winner is eyeing her fifth nomination for the drama, which sees her playing Lynsey, a military engineer who returns home to the New Orleans from Afghanistan with a a debilitating brain injury as well as trauma to unpack.
The spot is sparse on plot details, but shows Lynsey connecting with a new friend (Brian Tyree Henry, “Atlanta”) and starting a job cleaning pools.
Described as “a quiet but devastating, and ultimately uplifting, story about coming to terms and moving forward” in its official synopsis, “Causeway” marks theater director Lila Neugebauer’s feature debut. “It’s an excavation of how we cope and begin to heal, one seemingly small — sometimes painful, sometimes revelatory — step at a time,” she told us. “I’m endlessly fascinated by how the obstacles that interfere with our ability to make progress are often internal — and so much of the time, we have to confront those internal blocks, obfuscations, and narratives before we can meaningfully begin to change.”
Best known for directing a Tony-nominated revival of “The Waverly Gallery,” Neugebauer’s TV directing credits include “Maid” and “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”
Lawrence won an Oscar for “Silver Linings Playbook” and scored nods for “Joy,” “American Hustle,” and her breakout film, “Winter’s Bone.” She was last seen in “Don’t Look Up.”
“Causeway” will premiere in select theaters and globally on Apple TV+ on November 4. Ottessa Moshfegh, Elizabeth Sanders, and Luke Goebel penned the script. Lawrence is among the pic’s producers.
