“The wounds of some hearts aren’t always visible to the natural eye,” we’re told in a new trailer for “Rare Objects.” Co-written and directed by “Dawson’s Creek” alumna Katie Holmes, the adaptation of Kathleen Tessaro’s novel of the same name tells the story of an unlikely friendship that blossoms in a psychiatric hospital.
Benita (Julia Mayorga, “American Rust”) is determined to reclaim her sense of self after being institutionalized. She lands a job at a shop selling rare artifacts and decides to take some time off school. She reconnects with the woman (Katie Holmes) she befriended at the hospital and the pair celebrate “second chances” — but the spot suggests that Benita is still facing major struggles.
“Rare Objects” marks Holmes’ third feature as a director. The drama follows 2016’s “All We Had” and 2022’s “Alone Together.”
