Alice Lowe’s “Prevenge” Secures a U.S. Release

“Prevenge”

You’ll be able to watch a dark comedy about a mom-to-be on a killing spree in U.S. theaters next month. Happy Friday! The North American rights to Alice Lowe’s delightfully weird “Prevenge” have been acquired by Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror streaming service, Deadline reports. “Prevenge” will mark Shudder’s first theatrical release.

Written, directed, and starring Lowe, the horror-inspired film depicts the worst pregnancy ever. Ruth (Lowe) isn’t carrying a bundle of joy so much as a bundle of evil. Her unborn baby is speaking to the mom-to-be from her womb, and she’s making seriously disturbing demands. “Kill him or I kill you,” the baby threatens in a trailer for the film. Ruth is being coached to become a serial murderer.

“Prevenge” made its world premiere at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival’s Critics’ Week and has gone on to screen at fests such as the Toronto Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival.

When we asked Lowe what drew her to the story, she explained, “I was pregnant and had a chance to make a film. It came about as a twisted little hybrid of an idea! Pregnancy meets revenge, and birth meets death. [I wanted to explore] the absurdity of [those combinations].” She said that audiences can view “Prevenge” “as a fun guilty pleasure slasher or as a meditation on the existentialism of pregnancy or whatever.” “I deliberately made lots of tonal shifts so that you could feel flashes of lots of different conflicting emotions — a bit like the experience of being pregnant,” she elaborated.

“Prevenge” is Lowe’s feature directorial debut. She previously helmed the 2014 short “Solitudo,” a horror story about a nun stalked by a creature.

Those in the U.K. are lucky enough to catch “Prevenge” beginning today, February 10. The film is now in theaters across the pond. “Prevenge” will open in NY and LA March 24.
