Who hasn’t been told to “be careful what you wish for”? A new horror film, “Wish Upon,” offers a dark twist on what can happen when all of your wishes come true. A trailer for the movie, starring up-and-comer Joey King (“Fargo”), hints at the nightmarish possibilities — and deadly consequences — of a teen who can change destiny according to her whims.
“After her father (Ryan Phillippe, ‘Shooter’) presents her with a mysterious music box, Clare Shannon (King) is surprised to find her every wish coming true,” the film’s official synopsis details. “Her joy slowly morphs into terror as she begins to realize the bloody price of each new wish.”
The trailer reveals that Clare gets seven wishes, giving her plenty of opportunities to do irreparable damage. When Clare butts heads with a classmate, she tells the music box, “I wish Darcie Chapman would just, like, go rot.” So Darcie Chapman rots (and we’re treated to a glimpse of her decaying leg, and even more horrifically, her face).
Clare claims the box has given her “everything,” including money and love, but the spot suggests that it’s not long before her dream becomes a nightmare.
Directed by John R. Leonetti (“Annabelle”) and written by Barbara Marshall (“Viral”), “Wish Upon” opens in theaters June 30.
