Ellen Shanman has been tapped to pen “The Hidden Girl” for Studio 8. Inspired by an ancient Chinese myth and a short story by Ken Liu, the sci-fi pic follows “a team of women assassins who are able to navigate between dimensions,” according to Deadline, who broke the news.
Described as being in the vein of “Interstellar” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “The Hidden Girl” was acquired by Studio 8 in 2016.
Shanman is an author whose books include “Right Before Your Eyes” and “Everything Nice.” She “most recently adapted the bestselling spy-girl book series ‘Gallagher Girls’ for Paramount as well as the Japanese cult anime series ‘Tiger & Bunny’ for Imagine Entertainment and Anew,” according to the source. She previously adapted YA superhero story “The Brokenhearted” for New Line Cinema and Alloy Entertainment.
Other female-led films about assassins on the way include Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section,” toplined by Blake Lively, and Jennifer Garner-starrer “Peppermint.” Jodie Comer (“The White Princess”) plays an assassin on “Fleabag” creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s new BBC America series, “Killing Eve.”
