Get used to seeing these names. WeForShe has announced the 2018 WriteHer List, a curated collection of women-penned TV scripts that have been sourced from industry executive favorites. The list “showcases writers from different levels of industry experience. Some of the scripts are funny, some of the scripts are dark; all are worth your time,” the press release revealing this year’s entries notes.
Scripts to make the cut include Katlin Fontana’s “Casey Can’t,” a dark comedy about a former Riot Grrrl rock journalist whose career is coming to a close, Eboni Freeman’s “Lovely Woman,” the story of a woman tasked with raising her late brother’s daughter as well as her own teenage sister, and Lauren Greer’s “Title IX,” which is based on true events that paved the way for the 1972 gender equality legislation.
“We are in a watershed moment for women in Hollywood, and there is still a lot of work to do in order to reach gender-balanced television,” the release emphasizes. “The percentage of female characters featured on broadcast network programs was the same in 2016–17 as it was nearly a decade earlier in 2007–08. Women comprised 21 percent of creators on broadcast network programs in 2016–2017, well below gender parity and a decline from the previous year.”
Though this list, WeForShe aims to “chip away at these dismal statistics. Writers from our lists get staffed, have pilots optioned, secure new representation, and set up deals at networks.”
