Trailer Watch: Anne Hathaway Is the Monster in “Colossal”

“Colossal”

Gloria is having a hard time. Her boyfriend broke up with her, she’s unemployed, and she just moved back to her hometown to crash at her family home. But as the new trailer for “Colossal” shows, Gloria has much bigger issues to deal with than her lack of income and disastrous romantic life. She’s literally a monster.

“Colossal” sees Oscar winner Anne Hathaway playing a different role than we’re used to seeing her in. Gloria is a hot mess. She’s not just struggling — she’s reckless, entitled, and selfish. “You’re out of control,” her ex (Dan Stevens, “Downton Abbey”) rightly observes. Gloria’s been self-destructive for a long time, but her life — and the state of the world — take a dramatic turn for the worse when her mental state results in a giant, violent Godzilla-like creature wreaking havoc in Seoul.

“I’m gonna show you guys something,” Gloria tells her hometown friends. As they watch a livestream of the monster in Seoul, it begins dancing. They look away from the stream and are stunned to see Gloria dancing in the exact same way. But it’s not all fun and games. Gloria is causing carnage — and fatalities — as the monster.

Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (“Timecrimes”), “Colossal” opens April 7. Jason Sudeikis (“The Last Man on Earth”), Austin Stowell (“Bridge of Spies”), and Tim Blake Nelson (“Fantastic Four”) co-star.

Hathaway’s recent credits include “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” “The Intern,” and “Interstellar.”
