Oprah Winfrey May Star in “Terms of Endearment” Remake

Oprah Winfrey in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”

Oprah Winfrey and Lee Daniels may be reuniting. The Oscar-nominated actress and media mogul is in negotiations to star in Daniels’ upcoming remake of “Terms of Endearment,” Indiewire reports. Winfrey previously acted for Daniels in 2013’s “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”

The original film, written and directed by James L. Brooks, took home five Academy Awards in 1984, including Best Picture. It centers on “widow Aurora (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter, Emma (Debra Winger), two women with a strong bond that face challenges after Emma marries Flap Horton (Jeff Daniels) against her mother’s wishes. After her marriage crumbles, she returns home to find out that she has terminal cancer,” Indiewire summarizes.

Indiewire reports that “Paramount Pictures secured the rights to the project for Daniels to develop.” If she signs on to the film, Winfrey will play MacLaine’s character. MacLaine snagged an Academy Award for her performance in the tearjerker dramedy.

Winfrey, who received an Oscar nod in 1986 for “The Color Purple,” seems very committed to expanding her acting resume as of late. Her recent acting credits include “Greenleaf” and “Selma.” She’s reuniting with her “Selma” director and frequent collaborator Ava DuVernay for “A Wrinkle in Time.” The powerhouses serve as executive producers on the OWN family drama “Queen Sugar.” Winfrey is also set to star in HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” alongside Rose Byrne (“Spy”).

Because she’s a superhero, Winfrey’s busy acting schedule isn’t keeping her from other pursuits. It was recently announced that she’s joining CBS’ “60 Minutes,” where she’ll offer her take on current events. Last month her new book imprint, An Oprah Book, launched their first release — Winfrey’s own “Food, Health, and Happiness” cookbook.
