Trailer Watch: A Soldier Collides with “Vengeful Bitches” in Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled”

“The Beguiled”

You know that badass scene in “Gone with the Wind” when Scarlett O’Hara kills the creepy soldier for trespassing on her beloved Tara and threatening to assault her? It appears that Sofia Coppola took that idea and ran with it for her newest movie, “The Beguiled.” The film’s trailer promises lots of longing, betrayal, scheming, and sex.

Set during the Civil War, “The Beguiled” centers on a Confederate girls’ boarding school that is thrown into chaos after taking in an injured Union soldier to convalesce. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Colin Farrell star in the film, which is based on Thomas P. Cullinan’s novel “A Painted Devil.” Cullinan’s book was previously adapted into a movie in 1971, also called “The Beguiled.”

At first glance, Farrell’s John McBurney seems to be a shy gentleman, making a connection with the stifled Edwina (Dunst) and convincing Martha (Kidman), presumably the school’s headmistress, that “the enemy is not what we believed.” However, Edwina isn’t the only one falling for John and soon the women are turning on each other in jealousy.

Not to worry: The trailer implies that the women reconcile and decide to punish John in a team effort. You can hear him scream, “What have you done to me, you vengeful bitches?” as the clip ends.

Oh, we cannot wait to find out.

“The Beguiled” sees Coppola reuniting with her “Virgin Suicides” and “Marie Antoinette” muse Dunst and “Somewhere” star Fanning. The filmmaker’s other credits include “A Very Murray Christmas,” “The Bling Ring,” and “Lost in Translation.”

You can catch all three leading ladies in theaters now. Fanning stars in “20th Century Women,” Dunst has a supporting role in “Hidden Figures,” and Kidman is currently up for an Oscar for her part in “Lion.”

“The Beguiled” hits theaters June 23.
