Alafair Burke to Adapt Her Sexual Harassment-Themed Novel “The Wife” for Amazon Studios

Alafair Burke’s novel “The Wife” has only been on bookshelves for a month but plans for a film adaptation are already in the works. Following a bidding war with several parties, Amazon Studios acquired the rights to the thriller, which sees a woman’s life unravel when her husband is accused of sexual harassment. According to Deadline, Burke will pen the script.

“The Wife” centers on Angela, who begins to re-live a past trauma after she finds out her husband, Jason, may be a sexual predator. Jason “is a handsome NYU prof whose book on socially conscious investing called ‘Equalonomics’ is a raging bestseller. He runs a successful consulting firm and hosts a top-rated podcast that has enabled Angela and her husband to live an idyllic life with their son in Greenwich Village,” the source details. “Then, [Jason’s] intern files a complaint at the NYPD Special Victims Unit claiming he made inappropriate sexual suggestions at the office. A second alleged victim surfaces and soon there is a murder and Angela has to confront past personal trauma she thought was far in the rear view mirror.”

The book was published in January by HarperCollins. Its focus on the long-lasting effects of trauma and males allies who are actually predatory is, as Deadline rightly notes, “a perfect fit for this #MeToo moment.”

“We’re thrilled to see Alafair Burke’s new novel take her renown and sales to a new level,” commented Harper Collins president/publisher Jonathan Burnham. “It is a narrative that couldn’t be more timely, and a brilliantly twisty tale that shows Burke at her very best.”

“The Wife” is Burke’s fourth standalone novel as a solo author. She’s also the writer behind the five-book Ellie Hatcher series and the Samantha Kincaid trilogy, and has co-written four novels with Mary Higgins Clark.

Burke received an Edgar Award nomination for “The Ex,” a thriller about a woman helping an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder. A former prosecutor, she is also a professor of criminal law and procedure at Hofstra University.
