Gina Rodriguez Inks Multi-Year Deal with CBS

Gina Rodriguez in “Jane the Virgin”

Looks like “Jane the Virgin” is just the beginning. Gina Rodriguez has signed a multi-year overall deal with CBS, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

With this deal, Rodriguez is set to “develop projects for network, cable, and streaming platforms” through her I Can and I Will Productions banner. Rodriguez’s production company is “committed to promoting diversity onscreen,” writes THR.

Rodriguez has already optioned “Dr. Illegal,” a German series about asylum seekers. In December I Can and I Will aired its first telecast, “Marie Claire Young Women’s Honors,” on The CW.

Centering on a chaste-by-choice young woman who is accidentally inseminated, “Jane the Virgin” is where Rodriguez made her breakthrough. The actress won a Golden Globe for her performance as Jane Villanueva in 2015. Recently renewed for a fourth season, the series is a part of CBS TV Studios and airs on The CW.

Along with her work on “Jane,” Rodriguez is currently writing a book for Simon & Schuster. “I Can and I Will: Tools My Daddy Gave Me” is a collection of all the advice Rodriguez received from her dad, Genaro Rodriguez, and will most likely be published later this year.

Rodriguez also keeps busy with We Will, the philanthropic foundation she established. We Will “focus[es] on arts education and scholarship funding for the less fortunate, with the aim of empowering young women.”

Rodriguez’s has previously acted in “Deepwater Horizon,” “Sticky Notes,” and “Filly Brown.” She will appear in the upcoming films “Sharon 1.2.3.” and “Annihilation.”
