A tragic death brings former BFFs back together in a new trailer for Elissa Down’s “The Honor List.” Piper (Meghan Rienks, “Freakish”), Sophie (Karrueche Tran, “Claws”), Isabella (Sasha Pieterse, “Pretty Little Liars”), and Honor (Arden Cho, “Teen Wolf”) were inseparable in middle school, but by the time senior year in high school rolls around, they barely speak. Unbeknownst to her old pals, Honor is terminally ill. When she dies she leaves a special message for the girls: she wants them to complete the bucket list they devised way back when. The deadline is their high school graduation, just as they originally planned.
“I have to do this list. And if you loved her, you’d do it with me,” Piper tells a reluctant Isabella.
“Piper is a popular party girl, Isabella is the editor of a feminist zine, [and] Sophie pledges to stay a virgin until marriage,” the film’s synopsis details, hinting at the tensions that may arise between the friends.
The trailer shows the trio tackling some of the items on the bucket list, including spilling their guts during an open mic night and exacting revenge on cheerleaders who subjected Isabella to a “jiggle test.”
“Life is too short to hate and hold grudges against the people you love,” Honor tells her friends in a video message. “Live your life to the fullest. Fall in love. Be fierce.”
Penned by Marilyn Fu (“The Sisterhood of the Night”),“The Honor List” is based on an idea by Rienks. “I always found that boys got young coming-of-age movies, and girls got movies like ‘Clueless,’ which I loved, but I didn’t really feel like we were seeing very real, honest people and female characters that weren’t just used to be sexy or to be love interests or things like that,” the YouTube star explained to Entertainment Weekly. “I wanted something I would have really loved to watch at that age.”
Down’s previous credits include “The Black Balloon” and episodes of “Confess” and “Offspring.”
“The Honor List” is available on digital and On Demand May 11 and on DVD May 15.
