The CW Renews “Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and “Supergirl”

“Jane the Virgin”

This calls for a celebration: “Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and “Supergirl” have all received early renewals from The CW, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The three female-led series will be back for the 2017–18 broadcast season.

Gina Rodriguez and Rachel Bloom, the respective stars of “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” were both up for an award at the Golden Globes last night. They received nods for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Comedy or Musical. Rodriguez took home the trophy in this category in 2015, and Bloom followed in her footsteps in 2016. Both of the critically acclaimed series were created by women: Jennie Snyder Urman conceived “Jane the Virgin,” and Bloom collaborated with Aline Brosh McKenna to bring “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” to life.

Unfortunately The CW has reduced episode orders for both series. “Jane” will go from 22 episodes to 20, and “Crazy” will go from 18 episodes to 13.

“Supergirl,” starring Melissa Benoist as the titular caped crusader, originally aired on CBS. It switched homes to The CW for its sophomore season. This upcoming season will be its third. The series was co-created by Allison Adler.

“Over the past several seasons, The CW has built a schedule of proven performers, from our lineup of DC superheroes, to critically acclaimed comedies, to sci-fi dramas,” CW president Mark Pedowitz said in a statement announcing the news. “Early pickups of these … series now allow our producers to plan ahead for next season, and gives us a solid base to build on for next season, with original scripted series to roll out all year long.”

The fate of some of The CW’s other female-centric shows, including “The 100,” “iZombie,” and “Frequency,” remain unclear, but more information will be released leading up to the network’s upfront presentation in May. Still, it’s a relief to know that we are guaranteed to see plenty more of Jane’s family drama, Rebecca’s singing, and Kara’s heroics in the coming season.

The CW recently confirmed that a “Charmed” reboot is in the works at the network. The new version of the witch story hails from Snyder Urman, and is being penned by Snyder Urman, Jessica O’Toole, and Amy Rardin.
