Trailer Watch: A Transgender Girl Fights for Her Rights in “Growing Up Coy”

“Growing Up Coy”

A young transgender girl just made history by landing the cover story of National Geographic Magazine. Trans issues are getting the attention they deserve and need more and more, and the upcoming documentary “Growing Up Coy” joins the spotlight when it hits Netflix early next month.

“Growing Up Coy,” according to it’s official synopsis, “centers around a young Colorado family who engages in a highly publicized legal battle and civil rights case in 2013, as they fight for their 6-year-old transgender daughter’s right to use the girls’ bathroom at her elementary school. Coy Mathis’ case is one of the first in the nation that specifically addresses transgender bathroom rights. The landmark ruling from the Colorado Civil Rights Division is the first in the nation to decide in favor of a transgender youth using the facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”

“This documentary highlights the sacrifices that Jeremy and Kathryn Mathis made not only to ensure their daughter’s basic rights, but to help advance understanding for all transgender people’s prerogative to live in an inclusive world with dignity,” said director Eric Juhola. “[We] hope that parents, school communities, and lawmakers all over the world will have a greater understanding of and compassion for transgender kids and the challenges they face.”

While the trailer definitely highlights the legal battles that plague Coy and her family, it also suggests that the film explores the hesitations her parents have making her the face of a social issue and putting her through massive public exposure.

“Growing Up Coy” will premiere on Netflix on January 6, 2017. Check out the trailer below.
