Tig Notaro’s “One Mississippi” Renewed for Second Season on Amazon

“One Mississippi”

“One Mississippi” will return for a second season. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Tig Notaro’s semi-autobiographical series has been renewed by Amazon. The comedian, writer, and actress co-created “One Mississippi” with “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody and stars in the half-hour comedy series. Kate Robin (“The Affair,” “Six Feet Under”) serves as showrunner.

The series tells the story of a woman (Notaro) who, “still reeling from her own declining health, returns to her childhood hometown of Bay Saint Lucille, Miss., to deal with the unexpected death of her mother, the one person who actually understood her,” THR summarizes. “As she deals with the tragedy and events from her past, the series becomes an exploration of family.”

“One Mississippi’s” first season included six episodes, three of which were directed by Nicole Holofcener (“Enough Said”). Shira Piven (“Welcome to Me”) also helmed an episode.

“[It’s] about 85 percent real and there were a few parts that we bridged moments together,” Notaro has said regarding how close “One Mississippi” gets to her own life. “The timeline is off from when my life actually fell apart; we crammed all that into the pilot so we could go from there if it went to series. Having gone to series, it’s more fictional but there’s still a lot of reality and real moments from my life.”

In the span of a four month period, Notaro was diagnosed with cancer, almost died from an intestinal disease, her mother passed away, and she experienced a breakup.

“Making a show as comic and tragic as ‘One Mississippi’ is a risk. Pulling it off with such intelligence and nuance is rare,” said Joe Lewis, Amazon’s head of comedy and drama. “We’re grateful for the audience response and we’re excited to bring them more of Tig and Kate’s brilliance in Season 2.”

Season 2 of “One Mississippi” will be available to stream in 2017.
