Whoopi Goldberg to Produce Drama about Harlem Crime Boss and Her Politician Son

Whoopi Goldberg in “Glee”

Whoopi Goldberg may return to acting in a major way. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the Oscar winner is joining forces with Bravo to develop an untitled series for the network, and is eyeing one of the roles in the project.

“The modern-day drama centers on a Harlem crime boss who is reunited with her oldest son — whom she thought was dead — after he returns to New York City to run for mayor,” THR reports. “Being able to pass as white, he faked his death as a teenager and left New York in order to get a new start on life.” Goldberg is considering the role of the crime boss, but she’s not inked in to star.

Of course, Goldberg has been a mainstay on TV for a long time as a moderator on “The View.” She’s appeared on the talk show since 2005, but her contract is up at the end of this season, its 20th. Goldberg has continued to act while fulfilling her “View” duties, including a recurring role on “Glee” and appearances on “Nashville” and “The Tick.” But this new drama would be her meatiest role in some time.

Goldberg will executive produce the project along with her One Ho Productions president Tom Leonardis and 44 Blue Productions’ Stephanie Drackovitch. The script will be penned by Amitabh Klemm (“Lifeline”), who will also exec produce.

“Sources stress the Bravo project is in its early stages, and it’s unclear if she does ultimately star in it just how that would impact her future on the ABC talker,” THR specifies. In other words, Goldberg isn’t necessarily leaving “The View” — even if the Bravo project does get picked up and she ends up starring in it.

Goldberg serves as executive producer on “Strut,” Oxygen’s reality TV series about transgender models who are breaking into the fashion industry. The first season of the show concluded in October.
