Trailer Watch: Dorothy’s Not in Kansas Anymore in NBC’s “Emerald City”

“Emerald City”: NBC

There’s no doubt that HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” has had a big influence on television and created an interest in more fantastical fare. The latest new series to seemingly take the fantasy genre into a more dark and dramatic “GoT” route is NBC’s “Emerald City,” a twist on the land of Oz.

In this new series, Adria Arjona stars as Dorothy in a more modern setting. She’s whisked away by the usual tornado, only this time she’s trapped in a cop car with a K9 police dog. But this version of Oz looks a little different than the 1939 classic film “The Wizard of Oz.” From the Munchkins to the yellow brick road to the Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch, it’s all there, but with a darker and more serious edge.

L. Frank Baum may have written his Oz stories for children, but they’re filled with adult themes and allusions, and this new series seems to be aiming to capitalize on that. War, science, and politics will all come into play, though being on network TV, surely the violence and sexual content won’t quite match that of “GoT.”

“Emerald City” co-stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Vincent D’Onofrio, Joely Richardson, Florence Kasumba, and Ana Ularu. It will have a two-hour special event premiere on Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 p.m.
