Netflix has unveiled an emotional trailer for their reimagining of “One Day at a Time,” Norman Lear’s beloved sitcom. The original series aired on CBS from 1975 to 1984. Netflix’s version of the show centers on a Cuban-American family led by Penelope (Justina Machado, “Queen of the South”), a single mom and military veteran.
The trailer shows Penelope dealing with issues as wide-ranging as racism, her kid’s relentless sass, and the psychological effects of going to war.
As Netflix summarizes, “‘One Day at a Time’ is a hilarious and heartfelt comedy that follows three generations of a Cuban-American family sometimes-reluctantly cohabitating and navigating the ups and downs of life.” Penelope “journeys through the triumphs and tribulations that come with raising two strong-willed, mega-millennial children, all the while enlisting the ‘help; of her old-school mother and her building manager-turned-invaluable confidante. Through an contemporary lens, One Day at a Time offers a glimpse at what life looks like, in good times and bad — and how those around you somehow make it all worthwhile.” The series co-stars Rita Moreno (“West Side Story”), Isabella Gomez (“Matador”), Stephen Tobolowsky (“The Goldbergs”), Todd Grinnell (“Grace & Frankie”), and newcomer Marcel Ruiz.
Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce serve co-showrunners alongside Lear.
Check out the trailer to see Penelope take care of business at her job as a nurse and at home with the kids. “We’re not doing a regular debate,” Penelope tells her daughter (Gomez). “We argue the opposite side to better understand each other.” Great advice — but watch the spot to see how this technique backfires.
“One Day at a Time” lands at Netflix January 6.
