A Renewed Purpose

Hillary Clinton and a young girl speak at an event: Hillary Clinton/YouTube

Yesterday, many like-minded people woke up in shock that this country clearly did not share the values that we believe in. Today, the shock has worn off and the brutal reality has set in.

While Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, this country will be denied seeing a woman in its top leadership position. We will not be deterred from moving forward towards a world where we have gender and racial diversity. A world where this country can — and will — see a woman inaugurated as President of the United States.

We at Women and Hollywood renew our purpose to continue to fight for gender diversity, and for intersectionality in our entertainment and our culture. This work becomes even more vital now that most of the people in leadership will no doubt be white men who will be rolling back on the rights of women, people of color, and LGBTQ folks.

The mission of Women and Hollywood is even more imperative than it was just two days ago: We will continue unabated to amplify diverse women’s voices to remind all of us that a diversity of stories and experiences is vital to our world.

It’s on us to remind girls that they can be the heroes of the story. It’s on us to show boys that they don’t own the narratives. It’s on us to remind consumers that inclusivity in entertainment is a good thing. It’s on us to make sure that the world doesn’t only see monolithic models of the entertainment business.

We will fight for our culture. It’s too important not to. Onward.
