One of the few late-night voices doing any kind of serious critical work during this election season was that of Samantha Bee’s on her TBS show “Full Frontal.” Thankfully, the show has been renewed for a second season, so as we head into Trump’s America, Bee will be there to bring her caustic commentary and perhaps a little comedy to lighten up the situation.
As Vulture reports, the show is also switching nights. Beginning on January 11, “Full Frontal” will air on Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. The number of episodes wasn’t released, but Vulture writes that the network confirmed that the show has been picked up “through all of 2017.”
“I am only sorry that this renewal leaves me unavailable for a cabinet position in the new administration,” Bee said. “I will, however, be available to host the White House Correspondents Dinner, seeing as I already bought the dress.”
“Full Frontal” averages 3.3 million viewers per episode, but Bee’s clips perform even better next-day via social media. As pretty much the only woman on late night (Grace Helbig’s show on E! was cancelled after one season, and we’re not really sure if Chelsea Handler’s series on streaming giant Netflix can be considered late-night television), Bee has brought a female voice and demanding presence to the male-dominated genre. And she’s not done advocating for more women to join her.
As Variety reported, “I am never tired of that!” Bee exclaimed when a member of the press asked if she’s tired of answering the question about the lack of diversity. “It makes complete sense to me that it would be part of the conversation. There has just not been a wealth of women in late-night.”
That needs to change, and soon. With the political climate that disrespects women not ending any time soon, we’re going to need all of the female voices available.
