Amber Fares’ “Speed Sisters” Sets Release Date

“Speed Sisters”

“Speed Sisters” is racing into New York. First Run Features has announced that Amber Fares’ doc about the first all-women race car driving team in the Middle East will make its U.S. theatrical premiere in NY on February 10, 2017, with other cities to follow.

The award-winning feature follows a team of five women who “have sped their way into the heart of the gritty, male-dominated Palestinian street car-racing scene,” the film’s official synopsis reads. “Weaving together their lives on and off the track, ‘Speed Sisters’ is a surprising journey into the drive to go further and faster than anyone thought possible.”

“In the aftermath of 9/11, I have wanted to tell a story that would bridge the ever-growing gap between the Arab world and Canada, where my family lived,” Fares told Women and Hollywood. “To put it mildly, perceptions of Arabs in countries like the U.S. and Canada were skewed,” she explained. “When I came across the Speed Sisters, I realized that I found a story that could help bridge that gap. I liked the idea that these women were doing something that was completely unexpected. When people think of Palestine, they don’t normally equate it with race-car driving, let alone women racing. I saw an opportunity for a surprising story from the Middle East that people all over the world could relate to.”

“Speed Sisters” marks Fares’ feature directorial debut. She previously helmed “Ghetto Town,” a 2009 short about a young rap group based out of a refugee camp on the edge of Jerusalem. “Speed Sisters” made its World Premiere at Hot Docs in 2015, and went on to win the Audience Award at the Irish Film Institute Festival, Best Documentary at Vail Film Festival, and Best Documentary at Adelaide Film Festival. The critically acclaimed film also screened at the Athena Film Festival, a celebration of women and leadership.
