Naomie Harris to Be Honored with Variety Award at British Independent Film Awards

Naomie Harris in “Spectre”

Naomie Harris has been named as the 2016 recipient of the Variety Award, Variety reports. The actress will receive the honor at this year’s British Independent Film Awards ceremony, held December 4 in London.

While Harris is probably best known for her roles in the James Bond films “Skyfall” and “Spectre,” it’s her latest credit, indie sensation “Moonlight,” that has the film community buzzing. She plays the protagonist’s mother, a crack cocaine addict. Harris’ performance has many speculating that she’ll be nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Oscars.

The Variety Award celebrates a director, actor, writer. or producer who has made a mark internationally, and in doing so, “helped to focus the international spotlight on Britain.” Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, and Keira Knightley are among the award’s previous recipients. Coincidentally, Harris, Winslet, Mirren, and Knightley all appear in “Collateral Beauty,” an ensemble drama scheduled for release December 16.

“I am touched and honored to be included alongside such an inspiring and talented group of filmmakers,” said Harris. “Working in film has given me the chance to tell stories from around the world — and I’m incredibly proud to represent British filmmaking when doing so.”

BIFA commented, “Naomie is a versatile, intelligent actress who is making a huge impact internationally.”

Harris’ credits include “Our Kind of Traitor,” “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” “Miami Vice,” “28 Days Later,” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

BIFA nominations will be announced November 1.
