Voice of a Woman Film Festival Hits NYC

The Voice of A Woman Film Festival, which features the works of women in film, television, arts, and technology, kicks off in New York City this weekend. As the offical info details, the goal of the fest is to showcase women’s works that “are rarely, if ever, seen in the mainstream. The festival seeks to give an authentic ‘voice’ to the stories and experiences of women and girls, exploring the ways in which the arts impact identity, society, and cultural narratives globally.”

As a group and movement, putting on festivals and talks, The Voice of a Woman has been around since 2009 and is based in London. This weekend’s fest will mark its New York debut. The organization puts on pop-up screenings in various venues throughout London and does work in schools and communities. The goal is to make people “aware of the stories of women and girls globally,” and they strive to “inspire and empower girls to give ‘voice’ to their own unique, individual self-expression, breaking through barriers to freedom and building confidence, encouraging self-advocacy, and self-determination.”

Festival participants include Maureen A. Bryan, founder of The Voice of A Woman Festival; Amy Richards, co-founder of the Third Wave Foundation and executive producer of “‘Woman, ” a new weekly docuseries from Gloria Steinem that investigates how violence against women drives global instability; Amy Fox, screenwriter of the film “Equity”; Kamala Lopez, producer of the film “Equal Means Equal”; Resh Sidhu, creative director of Framestore Virtual Reality; Michaela Angela Davis, award winning Image activist; Shola Lynch, director of “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners”; Anne J. Howell and Lisa Robinson, directors of “Claire in Motion”; Susan Sandler, screenwriter and playwright; actress Alysia Reiner; and actress Sarah Megan Thomas.
