The nominations for the International Documentary Association’s 2016 IDA Documentary Awards have been announced. Three of the six films competing for the Best Feature Award are directed or co-directed by women: “13th,” Ava DuVernay’s investigation into mass incarceration in the U.S., “Cameraperson,” Kirsten Johnson’s visual memoir, and “Weiner,” a portrait of disgraced NY politician Anthony Weiner, co-directed by Elyse Steinberg.
Johnson also scored a nomination for Best Short Award for “The Above,” an exploration of military surveillance. Only one other woman-directed short received a nod in this category: Amy Nicholson’s “Pickle,” a comedic look at a fish that can’t swim.
The 32nd IDA Awards take place December 9 in LA, but a number of special awards — and their winners — have already been announced. Recipients include International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam founder Ally Derks and “Hooligan Sparrow” helmer Nanfu Wang.
