Gina Rodriguez Producing Two Immigration-Themed Series for CBS TV Studios

Gina Rodriguez in “Jane the Virgin”

Looks like Gina Rodriguez is a multi-tasker on par with Jane Villanueva herself. Per Deadline, “Jane the Virgin” star Rodriguez is producing several projects for CBS TV Studios via her I Can & I Will shingle as part of her multi-year overall deal with the studio. Two of those projects, “Illegal” and “Have Mercy,” center on characters who happen to be immigrants, something that feels especially relevant considering the demagogue’s recent shameful decision to end DACA.

“Illegal” is a CW dramedy about a teenage boy who finds out he is an undocumented immigrant. From “Jane the Virgin” writer Rafael Agustin, “Illegal” is inspired his life. Protagonist Rafael “is a charming but bumbling high school student just trying to survive puberty,” Deadline writes. “But when this all-American teenager discovers that he is not American at all, his perfect Honor Roll world is turned upside down.”

Based on the German series “Dr. Illegal,” CBS drama “Have Mercy” follows a Latina physician who immigrates to Miami but discovers she cannot practice medicine in the U.S. However, this doesn’t stop her from helping people — she “risks everything when she opens a makeshift clinic in her apartment to serve the community.” The project will be written and exec produced by Dailyn Rodriguez (“Queen Of the South”).

Other slated projects from I Can & I Will include adaptations of the 1991 Steve Martin rom-com “LA Story” and the Richard Fifield novel “Flood Girls.” Rodriguez will team up with Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films on the former, and with Drew Barrymore’s Flower Films and “Jane the Virgin” writer-producer Corinne Brinkerhoff on the latter.

In addition to the new season of “Jane,” romantic comedy “Sharon 1.2.3.,” sci-fi thriller “Annihilation,” and animated movies “Ferdinand,” and “The Star” are what’s next for Rodriguez. She has also signed on to voice the titular character in the new “Carmen Sandiego” series for Netflix.

Season 4 of “Jane the Virgin” premieres October 13, 2017.
